The Smithereens shows with Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers have been receiving great reviews, including this one from Scott Tady, Entertainment editor for the Beaver Times. “I’m ready to proclaim the concert this past Thursday as the best one from the first half of 2013,” he said, referring to the June 20 show at Pittsburg’s Consol Energy Center.
“Yes, those Black Keys and Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zero shows were terrific, too,” Tady wrote, “though if we’re also counting opening acts — and the marvelous set turned in by The Smithereens, then my highest mid-term grade goes to what a crowd of 14,000 or so witnessed Thursday. Bravo to Jersey rockers The Smithereens for getting the show off to a rousing start. Pat DiNizio’s loud, clean vocals, and Jim Babjak’s stinging guitar were as luminescent as Jeannie Shrimpton-circa 1965 for the set-launcher ‘Behind the Wall of Sleep.'”
